What is rules for trap shooting?

Trap shooting is a type of shooting sport in which a clay target is launched into the air from a trap house and shooters attempt to hit it with a shotgun. Here are some common rules for trap shooting:

  • The standard trap shooting event consists of 25 targets per round.
  • Each shooter takes turns shooting at the target from each of the five shooting stations positioned in a semi-circle around the trap house.
  • Shooters are allowed two shots per target.
  • Targets are released randomly from the trap house, and each shooter must wait until their turn to shoot before loading their gun.
  • The shooter must keep their shotgun stock below their shoulder until the target is released. Once the target is released, the shooter may mount their gun and take aim.
  • The shooter is only allowed to shoot at the target as it is moving away from the trap house, and must not shoot at the target until it has passed the shooting station or if it is outside of the shooting range.
  • If a shooter hits the target, they receive one point. A perfect score is 25 out of 25 hits.
  • If a target is broken into pieces, the shooter is still awarded the point as long as the largest piece remains within the scoring area.
  • Safety is paramount, and all shooters must follow a strict set of safety protocols, including wearing eye and ear protection and keeping their shotgun pointed in a safe direction at all times.
